O'Neil was a participant in O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when she was in high school. The judges were impressed with her singing and she was able to advance to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she experienced substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were shocked by the outcome and urged the audience to support those with great singing talent, like Melissa. With consistently excellent performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished in the bottom three. She was the judge. Werner was confident, following two more stunning performances that O'Neil was going to be the winner of her Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and youngest ever to win the show in the wake of the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
